What I’ve Learned About Coming to God with Humble Confidence
Even when I don’t have the perfect words or all the answers, I’ve discovered that God welcomes me — boldly, honestly, and just as I am.
Over the past few months, things happened in my personal life that were a stretch for me, where I was caught between faith and fear. I felt that life pressed in from all sides. I had been praying over a decision, asking God for wisdom, but the answers didn’t come as quickly as I hoped. And being human, doubt crept in quietly. I was wondering, “Am I asking the right thing? Is God even listening?” I was overwhelmed and didn’t know what to pray, except just to say, “Lord, help.”
Yet even in the heaviness, I found a quiet, steady confidence that God was with me — not because I had the right words, but because He is always near. While reading a daily devotional, I was just reminded again that coming to Him isn’t about having it all but about knowing He welcomes us as we are — in our brokenness or when we’re strong, certain, or struggling—and that He listens when we call.
1 John 5:14 says, “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.”
The word confidence jumped out to me. It is not arrogance or entitlement. But confidence — humble, childlike, and rooted in trust.
Children Know They’re Welcome
It is actually so simple; if we believe in Jesus, we are children of God. And with that identity comes access. Not just someday in heaven, but right now. Like children who freely approach their loving parents, we too are welcomed to bring our prayers, needs, and questions to God.
I thought about my own children when they were still teenagers. They didn’t tiptoe around me, scared that they were bothering me. When they wanted something, they just asked. Boldly. Sincerely. Expectantly.
That’s God’s invitation also to us.
Sometimes we hesitate to pray boldly because we confuse humility with hesitation. We second-guess ourselves. We wonder if we’re worthy. But Scripture says, “Let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.” (Hebrews 4:16)
This kind of boldness is not about demanding our way. It’s about knowing who we belong to — a God who is full of mercy and ready to help. We come not as strangers, but as children of the King.
Yes, No, or Not Yet — He Still Hears
Sometimes the answer to our prayer is yes. Sometimes it’s no. Sometimes it’s not yet. But regardless of the outcome, we are promised this: He hears us.
And when our hearts are aligned with His will, meaning when we ask not out of selfishness but out of surrender, He delights in giving us what we need. God loves us enough to answer with wisdom, not just ease.
When we seek His Kingdom above all else, He will give us everything we need. (Luke 12:31). Don’t think you are a bother to God. Our prayers don’t wear Him out. On the contrary, He delights in hearing us. He is moved by our faith. And He responds in love.
Come as You Are
So, what I’ve learned is whether you’re full of faith or full of questions, whether your prayers feel empty or broken, you can come boldly to God. You can bring your praises and your pain, your joy and your confusion.
And when you do, come with humble confidence — like a child who knows they are deeply loved.
