Life is a constant struggle between our spiritual desires and our earthly temptations, between the "Spirit" and the "flesh." The term "flesh" here means our sinful nature, the part of us that's prone to make wrong choices. The good news is, we don't have to fight this battle alone. God gives us the Holy Spirit to help us, to empower us against the snares and lures of this world.
What Does It Mean to Walk in the Spirit?
In Galatians 5:16-17, Paul says: “Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want”. The meaning of the Holy Spirit is to “come alongside you.” To walk in the Spirit means to live our lives totally dependent on God, to walk step by step with the Holy Spirit alongside God. I am not rushing and go ahead of God. I am by His side, holding His hand because I cannot do it in my own strength or in my own power.
“Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit says the Lord.” (Zechariah 4:6). You must recognize that you can't do it on your own but rather embrace the strength, power, and wisdom that the Holy Spirit offers.
Filling the Room with the Spirit
When you're filled with the Holy Spirit, there's no room left for sin. Think of it like a balloon: if you fill it completely with clean air (the Spirit), there's no room for anything else (sin). It's crucial to flood your life with the Holy Spirit, overwhelming sin in the process. Jesus said that for those that believe in him, from our innermost being "will flow rivers of living water" (John 7:38). From God we shall receive an abundance of spiritual blessings not only to refresh us, but also so we can be instrumental in refreshing and comforting others.
Only Jesus can give us the living water, a life-giving fountain that springs up in us because we are filled with the Hole Spirit (John 4:14). The living water that Jesus gives us completely satisfies our thirsts and endures to eternal life. You can strengthen the Holy Spirit's work in you by practicing spiritual disciplines that fuel your spiritual journey.
Practical Steps to Fill Yourself with the Spirit
So how can you fill your life with the Holy Spirit and resist temptation? Here are some simple yet effective actions to consider:
Memorize Promises: Keep God's assurances about faithfulness in your heart. When you have His words stored inside you, they can act like a shield against temptation.
Praise Constantly: Let your day be a continuous song of praise to God. This positive spiritual focus can crowd out negative temptations.
Read with Open Eyes: When you're reading the Bible, pray for understanding. Ask God to reveal the true meaning of the words to you.
Talk to the Spirit: Keep a constant line of communication open with the Holy Spirit. Whether you're making a decision or feeling tempted, consult your divine Guide.
Find Your Tribe: Surround yourself with people who are as committed as you are to overcoming sin. There's strength in numbers, especially when you're all striving for the same spiritual goal.
Remember, it's a daily journey that you don't have to take alone. With the Holy Spirit by your side, you can walk this path successfully. So go ahead, take the next step, and let the Spirit fill your life.
