Walking in the Light (Part 2): The Daily Battle — Choices We Make
Small, everyday decisions either draw us into God’s light or lead us quietly into shadows.
Part of the 5-Part Series: Walking in the Light—Winning the Daily Battle Against Darkness
As we continue our series, I want to confess that writing this is not just for you; it’s for me too — because these truths are ones I need to live out daily. In part 1, we started by looking at what light and darkness mean spiritually. This week, we look at how these truths show up in our daily choices.
I used to think spiritual battles were mostly big moments — crises or major temptations. But I’ve realised they happen mostly in the small, ordinary decisions we make every day. From the moment I open my eyes in the morning, I am already making choices: will I start my day with God or let my mind race ahead to worries? Will I respond with patience or irritation? These are the daily battlefields between light and darkness.
Small Choices, Big Impact
We rarely wake up with the intention to be in darkness. It’s almost always subtle. A small compromise here, a neglected prayer there, or letting anxious thoughts get to you instead of God’s promises. It seems fine, and no one will know, but these small choices matter deeply.
Deuteronomy 30:19 puts it clearly: “I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live.” God invites us daily to choose life, to choose light. And with every choice, we either move closer to Him or slowly drift away.
At one stage in my life, my mornings were chaotic. The first thing I’ll do is grab my phone and check emails and social media, and immediately feel overwhelmed. Slowly, my peace was gone, and frustration crept in. What happened is that I was letting the noise of the world set the tone for my day instead of His light. Small choices, but they had big consequences.
The Power of Spiritual Disciplines
I have written about spiritual disciplines before — prayer, reading the Word, meditation on the Word, and worship, to name a few. They are not religious routines but lifelines. They help us choose the light consistently, even in the busiest seasons of our lives.
When you pause to pray, you invite God’s light into your moment. When you meditate on Scripture, you fill your mind with truth that outshines the lies of the enemy. When you choose worship over worry, you declare that God reigns over every shadow that tries to creep in.
And when we stumble, as we all do, we must remember: God’s mercy is new every morning (Lamentations 3:23). The key is not perfection but persistence — returning again and again to His light.
Living with Awareness
For me, it is to live with spiritual awareness. To be aware of your thoughts, your reactions, and your attitudes. Ask yourself: Are these drawing me toward the light or leading me into shadows? Don’t be discouraged by what you see. Instead, let it guide you back to the Light of the World.
I’ve found that even pausing in a stressful moment to say, “Lord, I choose Your light,” can change the entire course of my day. Try it and see how He meets you right there.
The daily battle between light and darkness is not fought with large actions but with small, consistent choices. God is not asking for perfection but for hearts that are willing to turn to Him daily. And the good news is His light is always ready to meet you.
"Lord, help me choose Your light in every decision. When I feel anxious, fear or frustration, remind me of Your presence and truth. Teach me to walk in Your ways, one step at a time."
Next Week:
In Part 3, we’ll look at how God’s light brings clarity and guidance in moments of confusion. I’ll share how His Word has lit the path for me in times when I couldn’t see the way forward. We’ll also look at practical ways to seek His light in the middle of life’s uncertainties.
