Seeking God Right Where You Are
God’s not just in heaven; He’s here, now, and closer than we think
Earlier in my life, I used to think of God as “up there,” way up in heaven, seated on a throne, distant and holy. And that He only gets involved when big things happen, like in a crisis. It’s as if I only thought of God when I really needed Him. I knew He was available but not always close.
Over time, however, I’ve come to realize that God never designed our relationship to be that way. He doesn’t just step into our lives when we’re overwhelmed or about to fall apart. He’s not in crisis management. He’s a present Father.
God wants to be part of our lives through the ordinary. To be with us when we go into our meetings, when playing sports, in our thoughts, and when we’re tired. We tend to forget that He’s already here. He isn’t far off. It’s just that we forget to look for Him right where we are.
So lately, I’ve been asking myself some important questions. Where in my day do I pause long enough to notice Him? Not just pray to Him or talk to Him, but notice Him? The quiet moments in the morning? The quick breath before I answer an email? The walk from one room to another? These are not random spaces; they are opportunities to connect.
I’ve also had to reflect on how often I try to do things in my own strength. And it’s a lot. Things that come naturally are to perform, plan, and please others before I remember that I don’t have to carry everything myself. What if I began to rely on His strength instead of constantly trying to manage my own? That shift, even in small ways, brings peace. Not always instant results, but always peace.
I’m learning that we don’t come to God because we’ve got everything figured out. We come because we don’t. We come with our need, and He meets us with His presence. And sometimes, we don't even realize that what we’re truly want isn’t a solution, but simply Him. Just His nearness, His voice, His peace.
Because the greatest gift He gives us isn’t just strength or guidance, but it’s Himself.
So if you sometimes feel like God is far away, He’s not. He’s closer than your breath. You don’t have to wait for Sunday or a major crisis. You can start seeking Him today, right where you are, in the quiet, in the chaos, in the questions.
Final Thought
God isn’t hiding in heaven waiting for us to be desperate. He’s already near. Slow down, reach out, and learn to seek His presence in the small moments of our everyday lives.
