Reconnecting with God When You Feel Distant
Understanding Why We Sometimes Struggle to Connect with God
We all want God to be the center of our lives, guiding us and giving us peace. But let’s be honest: there are times when connecting with God feels difficult, even impossible. I certainly have felt this way at times. I try to pray but feel stuck, unsure of what to say or where to start. It feels like God has become a distant friend—someone I haven’t talked to in a long time—and now the words just don’t come. It’s as if my prayers hit the ceiling, and I’m left feeling disconnected and guilty.
Often, when we feel this way, it’s a sign that other things have started to take priority over our relationship with God. Life can get busy, and we can become so focused on work, studies, family, or other responsibilities that our personal time with God falls by the wayside. Without realizing it, we drift away, and God becomes more of a distant memory than a daily presence. So, how do we reconnect with God when He feels far away? Here are some practical steps to help you find your way back to Him.
1. Show Up Consistently
The first step in reconnecting with God is simply showing up. Even when you feel distant, make the choice to spend time with Him. In James 4:8, we’re reminded, “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” God promises to meet us where we are if we make the effort to seek Him. Set aside a specific time each day—even if it’s just a few minutes—to sit quietly, pray, and focus on Him. It doesn’t have to be perfect; what matters is the intention to connect. Just showing up every day will gradually bring you closer to God.
2. Memorizing and Reflecting on God’s Word
One powerful way to reconnect with God is by getting to know Scripture. God’s Word is alive and speaks to us personally. Pick a verse or a passage that resonates with you and memorize it. This can be as simple as carrying a small card with a verse or saving it on your phone. When you memorize Scripture, it becomes part of you, giving you something to meditate on throughout the day and helping shift your focus back to God’s promises. For example, a verse like Psalm 42:1, “As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God,” can remind you of your deep need for Him, bringing back your desire to seek Him wholeheartedly.
3. Remember Who You Are in Christ
Feeling disconnected from God can sometimes stem from forgetting our identity in Him. We are His children, chosen, loved, and accepted. Reflecting on who you are in Christ can help restore your confidence in approaching Him. Ephesians 1:5 says, “He predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ.” You’re not just someone calling out to a distant God; you’re His beloved child. Knowing this can shift your perspective, helping you approach God with the assurance that He wants to be close to you.
4. Don’t believe the lies
When we feel distant from God, it’s easy to believe lies like “God doesn’t care about me” or “I’m too far gone to reconnect.” Recognize these thoughts for what they are—lies meant to keep you from experiencing God’s love. Replace these lies with the truth found in Scripture. Romans 8:38-39 reminds us that “nothing can separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Remind yourself daily that God is close and always willing to welcome you back.
5. Be Honest
God doesn’t expect us to hide our feelings. He wants us to bring our struggles to Him. Tell God exactly how you feel, whether it’s frustration, sadness, confusion, or guilt. The Psalms are full of examples of people pouring their hearts out to God, trusting that He understands. Being honest with God can be a huge relief, opening the door to genuine connection and allowing Him to work in your heart.
6. Reflect on Your Life
As you’re working to reconnect with God, consider where He fits into your daily life. Is He at the center of your thoughts, conversations, and decisions? There’s a verse that has always impacted me: "The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in Him." What does this mean for you? Is God present in your day-to-day, influencing your words, actions, and thoughts? If not, think about ways you can invite Him into every part of your life.
Moving Forward in Faith
Reconnecting with God is a journey, one that may take time and patience. You may not feel an instant change, but if you consistently take these steps, you’ll start to feel that connection grow. The feeling of disconnection will begin to fade as you experience His presence and peace.
So, take heart. God is closer than you think, waiting to draw near to you as you draw near to Him. Life can pull us in many directions, but if we put God first, He promises to meet us, guide us, and be the source of true fulfillment in our lives.
