How to Come Home and Get Right with God
No matter where you’ve been or what you’ve done, God’s arms are open wide. How to move from feeling lost to walking in His grace, forgiveness, and purpose for your life.
Have you ever felt that you are distant from God? I sometimes felt that way. Especially when things are getting tough at work or I have challenges in my personal life. It is not that I don’t believe in Him, but something feels not right—like there is a barrier between us and you wonder where God is in this situation. I try to be a “good person,” but no matter how hard I try, I can’t shake the feeling that something is missing. Whenever this happens, I have to remind myself that being right with God isn’t about trying harder—it’s about surrendering to Him.
To be right with God means to have a restored relationship with Him, to live in His grace, and to walk in His love. It’s knowing, deep in your heart, that you are forgiven, accepted, and made new. Why then are we separated from Him in the first place?
Sin Separates Us from God
The Bible is clear about this: we are all sinners.
"There is no one who does good, not even one." Psalm 14:3
This may sound harsh, but if we’re honest, we know it’s true. I’ve lied. I’ve been selfish. I’ve let pride and anger take over my heart. And the reality is, sin is not just about the bad things we do—it’s about our nature. We were created to walk with God, but sin has led us away; we have gone astray and turned to our own ways (Isaiah 53:6).
I used to think that as long as I did more good than bad, I would be okay. But that is a serious misunderstanding with serious consequences. Sin doesn’t just bring temporary struggles—it separates us from God, both now and for eternity. No matter how hard we try, we can’t fix this problem on our own.
How Can You Get Right with God?
Something I realized is that I can’t earn God’s love because He already loves me, and He demonstrated this on the cross. So, getting right with God isn’t about being perfect—it’s about responding to what He has already done for me.
To do that, we must:
Admit that we have sinned and need God’s forgiveness. It means realizing that I can’t fix myself—I need Jesus.
Confess our sins to God. We believe with our hearts, and with our mouths we confess. Romans 10:10
Believe in Jesus. Faith is what saves us—not good works, not church attendance, not trying harder. When I truly believe that Jesus died for me, my heart will change.
Repent. Repentance means choosing to walk in a new direction. Think of the prodigal son. He ran away from his father, wasted everything, and hit rock bottom. But when he decided to return home, his father didn’t reject him—he ran to him with open arms. That’s exactly how God receives us when we turn back to Him!
Call upon Jesus. God promises that anyone who calls on Him will be saved. Acts 2:21
Nothing dramatic happens when you surrender to God. It is a quiet personal realization that you are loved, forgiven, and free. With that comes His peace, joy, and presence in all your daily struggles and challenges.
Remember
Your sins are completely forgiven (1 John 1:9)
You receive eternal life (John 3:16)
You become a child of God (John 1:12)
You receive peace and a new purpose (2 Corinthians 5:17)
In our world today, it is easy to get separated from God. But by praying this simple prayer, you can make things right with God.
"God, I know that I have sinned against You and that I deserve punishment. But I believe that Jesus took my place on the cross and rose again so that I can be forgiven. I place my trust in You alone for my salvation. Thank You for Your grace and the gift of eternal life. "
No matter where you’ve been or what you’ve done, God’s arms are open wide. He loves you, He’s calling you, and He’s ready to welcome you home.
Don’t wait—make things right with God today!
