I've often longed to hear His voice leading me, but over time I've learned some valuable principles to help me discern God's will. It takes some intentional work on our part, along with dependence on the Holy Spirit's guidance, to tap into God's desire for our lives.
Connecting with God to Understand His Will
Think about how a close friendship develops over time. You don’t just meet someone and start to share your intimate thoughts. A close friendship starts through ongoing conversation. Similarly, the more we communicate openly with God in prayer, the more we get to know His character and preferences. Building a tight bond and friendship with Him enables us to become familiar with how He thinks.
Maintaining a lifeline of honest, regular prayer and dialogue with God about all aspects of life is key to gaining spiritual insight into His will and direction for us. Inviting them to intercede alongside you isn't intended to substitute your own seeking but to reinforce what you're hearing from the Spirit's voice. Their supporting spiritual insight should echo the revelations you've received in prayer. Experienced mentors act as sounding boards to verify the authenticity of pivotal decisions. So, they supplement your connection to God, providing confirming evidence that you're correctly detecting His will. Their advanced spiritual wisdom helps you avoid misinterpreting God's personal messages to you.
To hear God’s voice will take practice, but you will get better, and with time, aligning your desires with His will get easier. God rewards persistence by revealing more of His will as you earnestly seek it daily.
Tuning in to God's voice requires intentional steps like silencing distractions, praying Scripture back to God, and seeking out wise counsel from mentors. But it's so worth it. Just imagine how much easier life could be if you had access to God's perfect plan and will for your relationships, career, finances, and beyond!
